The Seniors section is open to all male members over the age of 55. It is a thriving section of the club with over a hundred members, of whom about fifty to sixty roll up to play on Tuesdays. It provides an opportunity for seniors to play in a varied, convivial (and competitive!) format and for newer members to meet and play with their peers. New members are especially welcome and do not have to have an active handicap to take part.
The Seniors’ regular day is usually a Tuesday with play starting at around 8 am. Players are teamed up as they arrive which enables everyone to play with a variety of other members over time. The format varies with Medals, Stableford and Texas/Florida Scrambles amongst those played. There are two Seniors’ qualifying competitions during each month, one off the white tees and the other off the yellows. After golf, the nineteenth hole usually hums with achievements of the day being recounted over a pint and a bite, and prizes of the day are given out. The Seniors also meet informally on a Friday morning on a regular basis if the course is not otherwise booked.
There is an active summer fixture list of friendly matches with about a dozen other clubs on a home and away basis. All Seniors with an active handicap are encouraged to apply to play in some of these matches which are usually followed by a thoroughly good lunch.
The Seniors’ section join with the Ladies’ section for a mixed competition (Seniors and Ladies teaming up) on two or three occasions during the season and this always attracts a full field for the golf followed by lunch together.
The highlight of the Seniors’ social year is the annual Christmas Lunch, preceded by nine holes of very relaxed golf, held in early December. The cup for the annual Seniors Singles knockout competition (The Mike Hawes Trophy) is presented at the lunch and afterwards much hilarity can ensue!
